February 6, 1985 was a day of great happiness for me. My first grandchild, Melanie, was born. I will always cherish my first Christmas as a grandfather. However, I still cannot explain the feeling of nostalgia that came over me when her parents took her to see Baby Jesus in Grandma's manger. There was no grandfather in the manger! This caused me to ponder for many years why Jesus' grandparents had been omitted in the First Christmas story I wrote "Ruben" so that the children can identify more closely with Jesus, the Christ Child, by realizing that he too had loving grandparents. I am sure that they cherished their grandchild as much as I cherish my own grandchildren.

Le 6 février 1985 fut un jour de grande joie pour moi. Melanie, ma première petite-fille voyait le jour. Le souvenir de mon premier Noël comme grand-papa sera imprimé dans ma mémoire à tout jamais. Il m’est difficile d’exprimer le sentiment de nostalgie qui m’a envahit lorsque ses parents ont emmené Melanie voir l’enfant Jésus à la crèche si soigneusement montée avec la touche particulière de grand-maman! Grand-père manquait à la scène... J’ai longuement réfléchi sur le sujet, à savoir pourquoi on avait passé sous silence la présence des grands-parents de Jésus dans l’histoire de Noël. J’ai donc écrit “Ruben” afin que les enfants puissent mieux s’identifier à Jésus, l’Enfant-Dieu et constatent qu’Il avait Lui aussi de bons et tendres grands-parents. Nul doute que ses grands-parents l’ont chéri et aimé aussi tendrement que je chéris mes sept petits-enfants.

The Illustrator, Anne Cote:
Born in Montreal in 1963, Anne has earned a Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design and conceptual Arts plus a Bachelor's Degree in Plastic Arts from the University of Quebec located in Montreal and Hull, Quebec. Many Advertising Agencies and Publishers have benefited from Anne's gift as an Illustrator and Graphic Designer. She has taught Graphic Design and Illustration in Canada and South America.
Presently, Anne works as a Freelance Illustrator and Graphic Designer.

Née à Montréal en 1963, Anne est Bachelière ès Art Graphique, Bachelière ès Art Plastique de l’université du Québec à Montréal et à Hull, Québec. Elle est spécialisée en illustration et dessin graphique et a oeuvré auprès d’ Agences de publicité et de maisons d’éditions. Elle a aussi enseigné le dessin graphique et l’illustration au Canada et en Amérique du Sud.
Actuellement, elle travaille et offre à la pige, ses talents en illustration et en dessin graphique.
